Convictions

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about convictions. Everyone has different convictions that they abide by whether they think so or not. Some are liberal beliefs and some are conservative, but either way they are still beliefs. Some people have died for their convictions, while others give in and compromise.Â
-“A fixed or firm belief.”
-“A fixed or firmly held belief, opinion, etc.”
Some convictions of mine: I do not celebrate Halloween, I do not do Santa or the Easter Bunny with my kids, I dress modestly, I do not listen to rap or rock music, I do not drink alcohol, and I do not watch rated R movies. These are just a few of my personal convictions, and while I know everyone is different, and everyone views things differently, I know everyone is going to have different convictions. Just because I view something as wrong or not right for my family, does not mean that you will. But you may have other convictions that I think are fine for my family or for me. Everyone is different.
Does everyone have convictions? Yes, I believe so. Whether you like to think so or not, you do the things you do, the way you do it, because of convictions, because of how you believe. So when do we let these convictions get out of hand? When we force others to have the same view as us or when we make fun of people who have higher standards or different convictions than us.
(This is not a literal translation just a quick explanation of the chapter in Corinthians. To read it in the Bible go to I Corinthians 8:1-13.)Â
So when we have convictions that are different or not as high a standard as someone else’s we need to be careful not to judge or make fun of them. I feel everyone’s convictions are between them in God, and when they do what they feel is right before God that is all that matters whether or not it is different from something I believe.Â
I will end on this note with another conviction I found in the Bible. What a great belief, to know that nothing can separate us from God’s love! I hope you believe this today!
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”Â
So what about you? What are your convictions? Would you die for any of your beliefs? Have you ever been embarrassed about any of your convictions? What is your view on convictions?
Great post! As usual! đ
A few of my convictions are dressing modest, not drinking alcohol, and not being "friends" with anyone of the opposite sex (other than family members of course) on social networking sites. The last one a lot of people don't understand but for me it's a respect thing for my husband. Plus with my husband deploying all the time I don't want to allow myself any windows of temptation, and I see social networking sites as an easy access to that.
