Overcoming Worry and Fear as a Military Spouse

I subscribe to several blogs by email and today I read a really great post that really made me think!  The article was titled, Breaking Free From Worry and Fear by Jocelyn Green. She is also a military spouse and author of the books, Faith Deployed and Faith Deployed…Again.

In her article, Jocelyn discusses how military spouses share the recurring theme of worry and fear in their lives, as they watch their spouses deploy. She gives several tips for overcoming fear and worry and also quotes several other military spouses.

Be Strong

After reading the article, I realized the truth of the daily worry and fear for military families for their loved ones. I remember when my husband, Jon told me he was going to join the Air Force. I was terrified! I knew nothing about the military or what military life was like, and all I could think about was him deploying.

I admit it, I cried when he told me. I was so confused as to where I would fit into this new plan and what would happen after he joined. At the time, we were not married yet, and we were about a month away from becoming engaged. Now, even though my husband has not deployed yet, I worry. I’m scared for him to go and I cannot even imagine what it’s like for the military spouses who have been through a deployment multiple times!

Overcoming Worry

How to Overcome Worry and Fear

Worry and fear have always been a problem in my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fearful of and anxious about the unknown. I worried about bad things happening and even had panic attacks because of it. While I know I have a Saviour who is there to help me any time of the day and who wants me to come to him, for some reason I don’t, but it’s something I have struggled with and am determined to overcome.

Jocelyn’s article lists several verses and quotes about worry and fear that really spoke to me. One of the verses she quoted is:

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7

I’m so glad God cares about every little thing going on in our lives. He does not want us to worry or fear because He is in control. When worrying about deployments, here are a few things to think about:

Whether they are at home or abroad, God’s plan for us is already written, we cannot do anything to change it.” – National Guard Wife, Mary Whitlock

Knowing we cannot change what will happen should help us not to worry. We have to remember our lives and those of our spouse are in God’s hands. We have to trust Him because He already knows the outcome.

There comes a point in every military wife‘s life when she is going to have to answer the question – Is God enough? Big enough to deal with the fear of death? Big enough to take care of her and her babies, should the unthinkable happen?” – Air Force Wife, Ellie Kay
This quote really made me think. I should not even have to ask the question, “Is God big enough?” Because in order to get to that point, I have already answered my question by asking. If we have to ask then we do not believe it to be true. We may want to, but we still may have that fear in the back of our minds. We have to determine to let go and tell God, “You are big enough. Big enough to take care of my problems, big enough to take care of my fears and worries, and big enough to take care of my husband.”

Okay, so yeah, fear is a big part of deployments. But I like the part you wrote about God being big enough to take care of everything. Deployments definitely make you step up your prayer life.

  4. Yes, I lived in WR for only 2 years. We moved there my senior year and I left shortly after.
How do you like it? My parents still live there, my mom does a home daycare and my dad works for Frito Lay… we were one of the FEW families that moved there NOT for military!
